"Life is an ongoing process of choosing between safety (out of fear and need for defense) and risk (for the sake of progress and growth). Make the growth choice a dozen times a day." - Abraham Maslow

Welcome to Belonging Psychotherapy. Whatever challenges have brought you to this space, I'm glad you're here. I created Belonging Psychotherapy out of a passion for helping people heal and feel better able to move through life authentically. If you feel like anxiety has started to run your life, you're struggling in your relationships, or you're challenged with a new transition, you've come to the right place. Together, we will explore and unpack the underlying factors contributing to your concerns, empowering you to make positive changes, and cultivate a sense of well-being and fulfillment in your life.

Services

Individual Therapy

In my practice, I value creating a strong, trusting relationship with my clients so that they feel comfortable and confident in our work together. My style is warm and interactive and I primarily utilize a client centered approach, meaning that I place strong value on your experiences and the lens through which you see the world. My goal is to help you find your best path toward change and personal growth by creating a supportive space in which to explore.

I draw from a variety of therapeutic interventions but the interventions that I primarily utilize in my work are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and self-compassion work. My goal is to help you accept and be present with the discomfort you experience from anxiety and commit to living a life that is meaningful to you regardless of that discomfort. I can hold space for how hard it is for you to go out into the world and be your authentic self, while also encouraging you to challenge, or commit, to doing it anyway. We'll work together to challenge cognitive distortions and explore how you can increase your self-compassion and self-acceptance so that you can live a more authentic and meaningful life.

While I want to help you move through your fear, it is important that we acknowledge the potential impact of trauma on your ability to do so. We may find it useful to incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to move through that trauma and self-defeating thoughts that feel particularly "stuck." We can discuss this further in session to see if EMDR would be useful.

About

My name is Tanya Schoettler and I have been working as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor for the past 10+ years. I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University and have training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I occasionally contribute to helpful resources like the Mind & Body section of the Today Show's website Today.com.

I enjoy working with adults struggling with stage-of-life issues, depression, and generalized anxiety, with a  particular interest in perfectionism and social anxiety. I love helping people overcome their fears and find the courage to seek out the meaningful relationships they desire. My goal is to help you realize the value you hold and that you deserve to have a life full of meaning and connection. You belong.

I am licensed to practice in Illinois and Minnesota.
